SUBJECT : CONDUCT OF STUDENT LEARNING SESSION TO ENHANCE HIGHER-ORDER THINKING SKILLS AND IMPROVE LEARNING OUTCOMES
DATE : January 24, 2025
As part of the Department of Education's continuing efforts to significantly improve learning outcomes, concerned offices have organized learning sessions for English, Science, and Mathematics (ESM) for students. These sessions aim to develop higher-order thinking skills by linking critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making with emotional regulation, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. Through activities and reflection, participants will build cognitive and emotional competencies to tackle complex tasks with confidence and creativity, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet international assessment standards.
The following is a summary of the learning delivery design, timeline, and implementation guidelines of these learning sessions.
Learning Delivery
· 8 weeks of Learning Sessions (24 sessions) from January 27 to March 10, 2025
o 3 sessions per week
§ 1 session is equivalent to 1 hour teaching
§ 1 session per learning area (English, Math, Science) per week
Guidelines:
· The orientation or onboarding of learners will begin once the list of learners is finalized and released to schools.
· ESM teachers shall conduct learning sessions every Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (except for the week of January 27 to 31, 2025).
· Schools have the discretion to adjust learning session schedules as needed and offer catch up for absentees to maintain learning continuity.
· Schools must offer learning sessions within school hours. If a learning session needs to be scheduled or re-scheduled after school hours or on a Saturday, due to class suspensions and other such unavoidable circumstances, the schools must inform the learners' parents/guardians and obtain clearance from the Schools Division Superintendent (SDS).
· Socio- Emotional Learning (SEL) will be embedded in the learning sessions. A separate session and coaching will be conducted at least three (3) days before the main survey.
· Check-ins will be conducted every two weeks after the start of the program. These include a two-hour test in all three learning areas to simulate the actual assessment. The goal is for learners to be familiar with the international assessment framework and style.
