The IDE 2025 aims to inspire reflections on the power of education to equip individuals and communities to navigate, understand, and influence technological advancement. In November 2021, the Philippines became a member of the UNESCO Executive Board to occupy one of the six seats for the Asia-Pacific Region (Electoral Group IV). The Executive Board is one of the three constitutional organs of UNESCO which examines the program of work for the UN agency and corresponding budget estimates submitted by the Director-General. It consists of 58 member states, each with a four-year term of office.
2. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed the 24th of January as the International Day of Education, as a call for a more inclusive, equitable, and quality education that helps in reducing gender, economic, and digital divides while also contributing towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNESCO invites all Member States to observe the International Day of Education in an appropriate manner, and enhance international cooperation in support of the efforts relevant to the realization of SDG 4 and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030.
3. UNESCO initiatives on education include:
a. Education transforms lives and is at the heart of UNESCO's mission to build peace, eradicate poverty, and drive sustainable development. UNESCO provides global and regional leadership in education, strengthens education systems worldwide, and responds to contemporary global challenges through education with gender equality as an underlying principle.
Its work encompasses quality educational development from preschool to higher education and beyond;
b. Education 2030 is a global multi-stakeholder mechanism to accelerate progress towards SDG 4;
c. The Futures of Education reimagines how knowledge and learning can shape the future of humanity and the planet; and
d. #RightToEducation campaign ensures that everyone, everywhere gets access to quality learning and contributes to transforming our collective future for the better.
