1.

The Department of Education (DepEd) announces the Participation of DepEd in the Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (QCP). This is pursuant to Executive Order No. 103, s. 2020 titled, Reconstituting and Strengthening the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC), and Amending Executive Order No. 55, s. 201. The NQC was created to serve as the coordinator and clearing house of all government initiatives for the 2021 QCP, such as the 500th Anniversary of the Victory of Lapu-Lapu in the Battle of Mactan, the Role of the Philippines in the First Circumnavigation of the World, the Introduction of Christianity in the Philippines, and other related events.

2.

The 500th Anniversary of the Victory of Lapu-Lapu in the Battle of Mactan was successfully observed virtually nationwide at the Liberty Shrine, Lapu-Lapu City on April 27, 2021. The Department participated in the celebration through a simple program and a simultaneous flag ceremony in all its offices and schools, which was aired through the official Facebook page of DepEd. A virtual symposium with the theme, Victory and Humanity was also conducted on May 7, 2021, when the discussion focused on the heroism of Lapu-Lapu, and how the quincentennial events inspired the succeeding national heroes, influenced our history, and impacted the lives of the Filipino people.

3.

The 2021 QCP will continue until September 6, 2022, which marks the completion of the first circumnavigation of the world. The QCP events aim to promote local and national tourism, reignite the nationalism of every Filipino, inculcate Filipino values for the common good, strengthen social cohesiveness of the community, and foster the Filipino creativity and innovation for our socioeconomic growth.

4.

The DepEd Central Office (CO), Regional Offices (ROs), Schools Division Offices (SDOs), together with the public and private schools, are enjoined to continue participating in the quincentennial-related activities such as, but not limited to the following:

a.     Strengthening discussion about the history and culture of the Philippines before the arrival of the circumnavigation fleet (pre-colonial period) to be led by the Araling Panlipunan supervisors;

b.     Organizing virtual campus programs, symposiums, and/or conferences among students, to be initiated by the Social Studies teachers in coordination with the MAPEH Department;

c.     Holding of inter-school virtual activities competitions such as essay writing, quiz bees, creative painting, storytelling, and oratorical contests;

d.     Promoting educational materials about the world of our ancestors and the important episodes of the achievement of humanity in circumnavigating the world for the first time in 1521, published at the NQC website www.nqc.gov.ph or at the official Facebook Page @nqc2021; and

e.     Integrating discussions and activities about the quincentennial historical events in these subject areas: (i) Sibika at Kultura, Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibaka (HEKASI); (ii) Araling Panlipunan (AP); (iii) Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (ESP); (iv) Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH); (v) Filipino; and (vi) English.

5.

The abovementioned activities are expected to raise the level of learners’ historical and cultural consciousness on the significance of the quincentennial commemorations; instill in the hearts and minds of the youth the greatness of the Filipino, the legacy of the national heroes, and the ideals of their nationhood; and ignite and strengthen unity during these challenging times.

6.

Expenses to be incurred during the virtual conduct of the above mentioned activities shall be charged to local funds, regional/schools division/school Parent-Teacher-Community Association (PTCA), school board funds (SBF) and other sources and grants, subject to the availability of funds and the usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.
