The Department of Education Transition Teams (DepEd), led by Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones and Vice President-elect and Incoming DepEd Secretary Sara Z. Duterte, held their first in-person meeting today at the DepEd Office of the Secretary in Pasig City. The meeting was preceded by a preparatory exchange of letters and communications to define the agenda of the meeting.
The program started with a one-on-one meeting between the Vice President-elect and the Secretary before the Transition Team meeting.
Secretary Briones provided an overview of Department’s work under the outgoing administration, including a summary of the scope of DepEd's responsibility, the contribution of the present administration to basic education reforms, and the identification of matters requiring immediate policy attention, such as the guidelines for the incoming school year.
In her response, the Vice President-elect acknowledged the contribution of the present DepEd team to the programs of President Duterte. She also thanked the Secretary for her immediate statement of support when the Vice President-elect was identified to lead the agency in the incoming administration.
There was a consensus on policy matters that need immediate attention: the guidelines for the incoming SY 2022-2023 and the budget for 2023. These will be the subject of immediate consultations between the concerned members of both teams.
The Vice President-elect also noted the UN Transforming Education Summit that will happen at the time of the UN General Assembly in September. The outgoing administration will transition the work of the National Consultations Convening Committee to the new administration. It will be recalled that the first leg of the consultations was held last June 14, 2022, at the NEAP Baguio.
For the turnover, while the terms end and start at noon on June 30, 2022, the Vice President-elect and the Secretary agreed to hold a Joint Farewell and Welcome Ceremony on July 4.
Secretary Briones reiterated her assurance that Vice President-elect Duterte has the full support of the DepEd family in this transition period. She also agreed to continue to work with the incoming administration as a consultant.
